Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, Bali, Indonesia

Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan
Blue Lagoon Nusa Ceningan
Paradise, Paradise, Paradise. That pretty much sums it up. Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan are closer to the main tourist areas of Bali than the Gili Islands and well worth the trip out. What should have been an easy boat ride straight from Gili Air to Nusa Lembongan turned into an over night stay in Sanur (on mainland Bali) as we were played the fool and bought return tickets instead of island hopping.

There are multiple different fast boats you can take from Sanur to Nusa Lembongan, we chose Arthamas for 30 AUD pp return. And what a picture perfect entry: aqua blue water, white sand, picturesque cliffs and for once where we landed on the beach there wasn’t any plastic! However, boats were moored everywhere.

We got our free transport to our accommodation Pandawa home stay. Where we found a little local girl asleep on the couch and nobody to check us in. All the keys were in the doors so we left our bags and went for a walk. Upon returning we were able to “officially check in” ( consisted of telling them that we were there).

6 AUD and a full tank of petrol in our scooter we were ready to adventure. Hang on. We could hear our mums- “Where are your helmets?!” So before we took off we asked for some. The response was “It’s ok, no police on the island” we laughed, but being the perfect children we put those helmets on and buckled the straps as tight as we could.

The one time I drove instead of Luke

Nusa Lembongan is 8 square kilometres (according to my reputable source wikipedia). To circumnavigate it took us about 20 minutes hooning going anywhere from 25km to 40km - real dare devils!

The main places to check off when you are on Nusa Lembongan are:

  • Mushroom beach: perfect if you want to watch the “circus” of boats coming into the bay with tourists packed to the brim, people in life jackets not knowing how to swim, and oh my gosh the selfies! I mean pretty much photo shoots. It’s safe to say this wasn’t our favourite place
  • Dream beach: beautiful, yet waves that dump on the shore. Some people cliff jump here but not on the day we went as the swell was to big
  • Devils tears: just a short walk to the right of dream beach and you are here. Waves crashing on the cliffs, causing sea spray to make rainbows. In between sets the cliffs turn into salty waterfalls. You could sit here for hours. This was one of our favourite spots

Before Wave.

After Wave.

  • Warung Putu or Mamma Mia Cafe on the east coast of the island you could sit, eat, drink, read and watch the view. This was not touristy and we immensely enjoyed it, more than once we spent time here. You can look out to where the seaweed crops used to be. A local, Ketut was telling us that in the last two years the seaweed has stopped growing and he believes its because of the pollution and climate change, and i do too. It was still beautiful.

  • Mangrove forest, Luke and I weren’t phased about this but you can take a little gondola ride throughout, we preferred to save our money and eat more food.

Nusa Ceningan

A stones throw from Nusa Lembongan island is Nusa Ceningans. This is connected by a narrow yellow bridge that you can either walk or take a scooter. Here we stayed at D’reborn Guest House. Which is run by the sweetest Balinese family.

On Nusa Ceningans we decided to walk instead of scoot as eating out every day was taking its toll. Blue lagoon was our first stop which has the most insanely blue water and white cliffs. It is a true natural beauty. But Bali being Bali there was construction going on literally on the cliff to make what I’m sure will be another one of the many infinity pools. It’s pretty heart breaking seeing such natural beauties get destroyed buy us, classic humanity.

After blue lagoon you can walk to Mahana Point Cafe where you can watch surfers or pay 5 AUD to cliff jump.  Or not, we chose to as drink bintangs and eat food as the swell was still to big.

Mahana Point

A walk down the cliff you can get to yet another “secret beach” which had some beautiful rock pools and we spent the afternoon swimming and reading (something we are getting pretty good at).

Secret Beach, you can see the roof of Mahana point on the cliff

Luke and my favourite thing to do is stay at cheap accommodation and then go hang out at fancy resorts to enjoy the view, their infinity pool and day beds. The best place to go was Twilight Huts, Nusa Ceningan for sunsets.

It was time to say goodbye to our beloved islands after our incredible week.

The crossing back to mainland Bali was pretty hairy but unlike many of the other passengers we didn't get sea sick (woohoo, we are such salty sea dogs). We spent two days in Legian which we loved. We stayed at Adus Beach Inn (16 AUD per night) and ate many meals at our favourite restaurant Warung Tujuh which was just around the corner.

All good things must come to an end. We loved Indonesia but were ready for the next adventure. We will definitely come back as we only explored the tip of the iceberg and want to see so much more!

Until next time, next stop Kuala Lumpur Malaysia!

Love,

Claire and Luke (Luke was drinking coffee, looking over the rainforest whilst I wrote this so he counts as a co-author to right?)
